Pearls are highly sensitive to acids and chemicals.
Last On: Always put your pearls on after you have applied your perfume, hairspray, lotions, and makeup. The chemicals in these products can eat away at the pearl’s “nacre” (the outer glow), making them look dull over time.
First Off: When you return home, make your pearls the first thing you remove before starting your skincare routine or hopping in the shower.
Pearls actually benefit from being worn!
They absorb tiny amounts of natural oils from your skin, which helps them stay hydrated and maintain their shine. If left in a dry box for years, they can become brittle and “dehydrate.”
After Every Wear: Wipe your pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth (microfiber or soft cotton) to remove any sweat or oils.
Deep Cleaning: If they look dirty, use a drop of mild, ivory soap and lukewarm water. Never submerge a pearl strand in water, as it weakens the silk thread. Instead, use a damp cloth to wipe each pearl individually.
Dry Thoroughly: Lay them flat on a soft towel to air-dry completely before storing.
Avoid the “Tangle”: Store your pearls in the Deccan Mist soft pouch or a separate compartment in your jewelry box. Harder gemstones like diamonds or gold can easily scratch the soft surface of a pearl.
Avoid Plastic: Never store pearls in plastic bags or airtight containers. They need to “breathe” to maintain their moisture levels.
Lay Them Flat: Store pearl necklaces flat rather than hanging them on a hook to prevent the silk thread from stretching over time.
Restringing: If you wear your pearls frequently, we recommend having them professionally restrung every 1–2 years.
Check the Knots: If you notice the knots between pearls looking frayed or the strand feeling “loose,” it’s time for a refresh.
