While there is no single “official” global standard (like the 4Cs for diamonds), the A-AAA scale is the most widely accepted system for grading Freshwater and Akoya pearls. Here is how we break it down so you can shop with confidence.
Before we look at the letters, remember that a grade is determined by four things:
Luster: The “glow” or how well the pearl reflects light.
Surface: How clean, smooth, and nick-free the pearl is.
Shape: How close the pearl is to a perfect sphere.
Nacre: The thickness and quality of the pearl’s outer layers.
This is the highest quality. If you want a “showstopper” piece, look for AAA.
AA pearls are beautiful and high-quality, but slightly more accessible in price.
A-grade pearls are the entry-level for genuine pearls.
